You want the best for your loved ones. If you have a senior family member who is homebound due to chronic illness or limited mobility, you know the additional struggles they can face. Seniors are at risk for loneliness and the health outcomes it can bring. Loneliness, however, isn’t about being alone. Activities for homebound elders can help avoid loneliness and live a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Activities Seniors Can Enjoy at Home

Being homebound doesn’t mean your loved one has to be bored or even lonely. They can enjoy several activities alone or with friends as well as, an at-home caregiver.

Jigsaw Puzzles

Puzzles are a wonderful activity to enjoy alone, with a family member, or with an at-home caregiver. They are challenging activities that your loved one can do while enjoying a pleasant conversation, a television show, or music.

Nature Watching

If your loved one has limited mobility or can’t enjoy outdoor activities, help them set up to watch nature from their porch, kitchen, or living room. Use bird feeders to attract local birds. Make sure they have bushes in the yard to attract small animals. You can also get books to help them identify wildlife and a journal to keep track of what they see.

Arts and Crafts

Seniors can enjoy a number of arts and crafts from the comfort of their own homes. Sketching, watercolors, knitting, and needlework are just a few options. You can also encourage your loved ones to explore their creativity through writing. If they love music and have a computer, consider helping them learn to use a music program to create songs they can enjoy with friends and family.

Reading

Reading is always a pleasant hobby. A good book can transport you to a whole other world while you sit in a comfortable recliner. Our Angels often help seniors get to book clubs so they can share their love of reading with others. Seniors can also use the internet to connect with virtual book clubs as well.
